NURSES STATION

The FCWC Nurses Station operates 24-hours a day during the week of Work Camp and is staffed by a Medical Team of trained professionals (LPN, RN, PA and/or MD) who volunteer to staff this area.  All campers with health conditions will be supported and cared for.  But, the Medical Team are volunteers so we ask that you partner with us by providing the best information possible when applying about what student needs there will be while at Work Camp.  And, students must be knowledgeable about the medication they take, their treatment and in some cases the technology associated with their treatment.

The Medical Team performs the following services:

Registration Health Screening

Every student attending Work Camp will go through a medical screening as part of their registration in-take on the first day of Work Camp.  Students should expect to answer questions about their current health condition and have their temperature taken.

This is when the Health & Doctor’s Authorization Form will be turned in and any medications will be provided to the Medical Team for their control and administration throughout the week.  This form may be submitted earlier by emailing a scanned copy to medical@flowercityworkcamp.org.

Health & Doctor’s Authorization Form

Note – you should provide your pediatrician with enough advanced notice for them to complete the form (usually 2-3 weeks).

Student’s must have a newly signed Health & Doctor’s Authorization Form to attend Work Camp each year.

Medication Administration

The Medical Team will store prescribed medications in a locked cabinet and will administer prescription and PRN/as-needed medications throughout the week of Work Camp.  These will be administered according to information provided in the student application and per the Doctor’s Authorization Form consistent with dosing instructions on the prescription bottles.

All medications must be provided in their original prescription containers.  Place containers in a zip-lock bag labeled with the student’s name.  Medications required to be refrigerated will be stored accordingly.

If special instructions exist that differ from the dosing instructions on the prescription bottle, be sure to include those instructions in the student application as well as the Doctor’s Authorization Form.

Students should come to the Nurses Station for their prescribed dose of medication at the appointed time.  If they do not present themselves for their dose, the Medical Team will work with Home Base to locate where they are and will make sure the dose is administered.  For medications to be taken during the day (not morning or evening), medications will be released to a site leader who will ensure the dose is administered properly and on time.

With the exception of an Epi Pen (epinephrine), no students will be allowed to be in possession of any prescription or as-needed/PRN medication at Work Camp.

Illness

Students should report any illness to the Nurses Station.  The Medical Team is able to provide cough drops, cough medicine or anti-inflammatories to help alleviate symptoms.

If a student experiences a fever and/or vomiting, their parents will be contacted to come get the student from Work Camp.  Students who leave Work Camp for any reason, including illness, may not return later in the week.

Treatment of Injuries

Each service team has access to a first aid kit to treat simple injuries at their site.  All injuries are reported to the Medical Team to be logged and for potential escalation if warranted.  Parents will be contacted of any injuries requiring additional treatment beyond that which the Medical Team can provide on-site.
